Sunrise Waldorf School is delighted to announce that we have successfully achieved full accreditation through the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA), a significant milestone reflecting the strength, integrity, and vitality of our school community.
Only about 30% of Waldorf schools in North America receive full accreditation without conditions, placing Sunrise among a select group of schools recognized for excellence. This recognition affirms the depth and authenticity of Waldorf education at Sunrise.
A Journey of Study, Reflection, and Community Engagement

Our accreditation self-study began in the 2024–2025 school year, as Sunrise prepared for the AWSNA accreditation visit in Fall 2026. This process invited us to look deeply at our decision-making practices, develop our Philosophy Statement, and examine how Waldorf educational principles are living throughout the school.
Varied approaches to study allowed faculty and community members to explore how the AWSNA Principles are expressed at Sunrise, inviting both depth and breadth of insight. Multiple groups and individuals contributed to this work, ensuring a holistic and community-rooted assessment.
The Leadership Team (Rae, Rachel, Alexis, and Ange) served as the Accreditation Team, integrating the gathered insights into Sunrise’s comprehensive self-study report, which was submitted to the AWSNA Accreditation Committee.
Welcoming the Visiting Team
In the fall, Sunrise welcomed a team of five accreditation evaluators representing Waldorf schools from across North America. Staying locally in Cowichan Bay, the team spent several days observing classes, meeting with faculty, staff, Board members, and parents, and developing a rich understanding of our school culture.
Their evaluation affirmed many areas of authentic strength at Sunrise. The official accreditation report highlighted:
Strong, organized administrative leadership, demonstrating deep commitment and competence in supporting faculty and staff
Thoughtful renewal of the Board’s work, including increased clarity in governance and revitalized participation
Meaningful Truth and Reconciliation initiatives, with conscious engagement in decolonizing curriculum
Robust development of the Care Coordinating Group, including clear documentation, follow-up, and dedication to student well-being
Deep appreciation for the outdoor campus, integrated as a living part of the educational experience
Strong collegial relationships among staff, alongside clear appreciation for the leadership of the Head of School and Education Director
A highly skilled Early Childhood faculty, grounded in core Waldorf principles
Committed parent participation, particularly in supporting festivals and seasonal celebrations
A deeply experienced teaching and support staff, many with Waldorf training or prior lead teaching experience
Creative and collaborative curriculum development, including the evolution of “BC Waldorf Education,” harmonizing provincial requirements with Waldorf pedagogy
These findings reflect a school that is thriving - professionally, pedagogically, and relationally.
Areas for Continued Growth
Alongside these many strengths, the accreditation process also offered thoughtful guidance on areas for continued growth - opportunities that will further strengthen both our organizational systems and our educational practice.

On an administrative level, this includes refining and updating key systems such as alumni tracking, mentoring guidelines, adjusted birthdate cutoffs, volunteer coordination, and campus and parking lot safety.
On a cultural level, the school is encouraged to continue strengthening how we communicate Waldorf education to our broader community. This includes more clearly articulating our educational approach, child development philosophy, and the intentions behind our programs for parents, teachers, and prospective families.
It also includes articulating and documenting our understanding of child development through the grades, and offering clear, concrete examples of how our programs meet these developmental stages. By sharing this work more openly, Sunrise can continue to foster transparency, deepen understanding, and strengthen its role as a living, thriving, contemporary Waldorf school.
Looking to the Future
As Sunrise looks toward the coming years, accreditation serves not as a conclusion, but as a living affirmation, recognizing the work already undertaken while inspiring continued growth.
Our school is thriving, evolving, and deepening its expression of Waldorf pedagogy in ways that honour our students, our community, and the future of education.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to this journey: our faculty, staff, Board, parents, leadership team, and the AWSNA visiting team. This achievement is shared by our entire community, and it reflects the strength, dedication, and heart of Sunrise Waldorf School.
We look forward to continuing this work together, deepening our practice, strengthening our connections, and supporting each child’s journey with care and intention.
